How to start playing Titanfall 2
Step 1: Play the Tutorial
Even if you have played countless hours of other first-person shooters I would still suggest that you play the tutorial, it teaches you the mechanics of the game and introduces you to the game’s world.
Step 2
When you are done with the tutorial you can either play the campaign or jump into multiplayer. I would suggest that you eventually play the campaign because it is a total blast but this guide will assume that you are looking to play multiplayer.
Step 3: Choosing a pilot ability
one of the first things you will need to do before getting into multiplayer is making a pilot loadout. here I will explain all of the tactical abilities here.
Cloak
Cloak makes you nearly invisible when used, but if you take damage or attack you will become visible again. If you want to use this I would suggest you use the kit low profile so your trail from wall running and jumping is hidden.
Pulse Blade
When you use Pulse Blade you throw a knife, when the knife lands it reveals nearby enemies to you and your teammates. If you throw the pulse blade at an enemy pilot or light infantry it will instantly kill them.
Grapple
The Grapple will pull you forward and in the direction, the grapple landed, the Grapple has 2 charges. By using the Grapple on the floor, a wall, or any other object you can “slingshot” yourself by canceling the ability early and keeping your momentum. You can pull pilots or light infantry by grappling them, and you can pull yourself towards an enemy titan for an easy rodeo by grappling them.
Stim
When Stim is used it greatly increases your speed and also increases your health regeneration. Stim is perfect for rushing enemies due to it making you harder to hit. I would suggest using a shotgun with stim but the choice is ultimately up to you.
A-wall
When this ability is used you throw out a small curved wall that can be shot out of from one side. This ability is good if you want to take down a Titan with a charge rifle or an archer. The wall only works one way, no matter what team you are on.
Phase Shift
When Phase Shift is used you temporarily can’t take any damage, but you can deal any damage yourself. This ability is perfect for getting yourself out of a bad situation. remember to reload while you are shift and remember that you leave a short trail when you first use phase shift.
Holo-pilot
When you use this ability is used you send a fake pilot that mimics the action you were doing when you send it out. The fake pilot can only get hit once before it vanishes or it vanishes after a short time. This ability has 2 charges.
Step 4: The Titans
There are 6 different Titans in Titanfall 2, I will go over a basic overview of all of them, showcasing their strengths and weaknesses along with some of my own thoughts on them.
ION

Ion will be the only titan you will have unlocked when you begin playing. Ion has medium health and medium speed along with a splinter rifle, a Rapid single-fire energy rifle with the ability to leverage the Ion’s central energy system to fire 3 deadly shots at once. ION’s abilities and alternate fire for her main gun all cost energy to use, a good ion can use her energy effectively and be a menace to enemy titans. Her abilities are laser shot, tripwire, and vortex shield and her core is Laser core.
SCORCH

Scorch has a large health pool but is slow and is equipped with a T-203 thermite launcher, a single fire cannon of fire that when the shots land somewhere (or on someone) it will leave a small area of fire that can deal damage over time. Scorch’s abilities are firewall, Incendiary trap, and thermal shield, and his core is Flame core.
NORTHSTAR

Northstar has a small amount of health but is fast and is equipped with a plasma rail gun. The plasma rail gun normally deals a low amount of damage but if you hold down alt-fire or look down the sights it will get more accurate and deal more damage. The Northstar is THE sniping titan, use her if you want to damage enemies from afar. Her abilities are cluster missile, VTOL hover, and tether trap and her core is Flight core.
RONIN

Ronin has a small amount of health but is extremely maneuverable and uses a Leadwall shotgun and a titan-sized sword. Ronin’s playstyle is based on hitting and running, he can deal a lot of damage in short bursts, but can’t take much damage himself. His abilities reduce the amount of damage you take and can secure the kill on an enemy titan. His abilities are arc wave, phase shift, and sword block, his core is Sword core.
TONE

Tone has a medium health pool and has medium speed and uses a 40MM tracker cannon. Tone is medium to sometimes long-range, but her main damage doesn’t come from her main gun. Every time you land a hit with her main fire it will put a counter on the enemy titan you hit, when you put 3 counters on an enemy titan you can fire a barrage of rockets at them. This makes tone not deal much damage at first but after a short time fighting, you can deal a big burst of damage. Tone’s abilities are tracking rockets, sonar lock, and particle wall, her core is Salvo core.
LEGION

Legion has a large health pool but is slow and equipped with a Predator cannon, a mini-gun with a very large clip size. To fire Legion’s gun you need to have it revved up, to do this you need to either fire and he will rev it up or you can aim and he will rev it up without firing. Legion excels at defending areas with his Predator cannon but can have trouble advancing or retreating. His Predator cannon can also be used for close range to medium range in its normal mode, but using the ability: mode switch can make him dangerous from a range but not as much of a threat close up. The Legion has the abilities power shot, mode switch, and gun shield, his core is Smart core.
MONARCH

Monarch by default has medium health and average speed and uses a XO16A2 chain gun. Monarch is the most complex Titan, one Monarch may stay back supporting their team while another might run in and tear apart the enemy. The reason why Monarch can have such diverse play styles is because of her cores. rather than dealing a large amount of damage in a short time like all the other Titans, her core gives her a permanent boost. But due to this, the monarch is the weakest when you first call her in but can be the strongest titan if you can keep her alive. Her cores deserve can’t be described in short here and probably deserves their own post (wink wink). the Monarch’s abilities are rocket salvo, rearm, and energy siphon, her core is Upgrade core.
Step 5
It looks like at this point you are ready to get into an actual game! Press play and pick what game mode you want to play. I would suggest that you play Attrition first to get a feel for all of the mechanics and see what you like and don’t like but I would stay away from live fire and coliseum until you get a good feel for the game
Step 6
That’s it!
Remember to try different game modes, guns, abilities, and titans and use the ones you have the most fun with!
